About Obudu Mountain Resort

Perched on the serene Obudu Plateau in Cross River State, Obudu Mountain Resort began its journey in 1949 when Scottish rancher M. McCaughley first explored the Sankwala Mountains and camped atop the Oshie Ridge. Captivated by the cool climate and breathtaking views, he returned in 1951 with fellow ranchers Hugh Jones and Dr. Crawfield to establish what was then known as the Obudu Cattle Ranch. Over the decades, the ranch evolved into a full-fledged resort, blending natural beauty with modern hospitality. Today, Obudu Mountain Resort stands as one of Nigeria’s premier eco-tourism destinations, offering guests a unique mix of adventure, tranquility, and cultural charm at over 1,500 meters above sea level

Our History

Nestled high in the Sankwala Mountains of Cross River State, Obudu Mountain Resort is one of Nigeria’s most iconic eco-tourism destinations. Originally discovered in 1949 by Scottish rancher M. McCaughley and developed into a cattle ranch in 1951, the resort has evolved over the decades into a serene haven for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and luxury travelers alike. Its transformation into a world-class resort was championed in the early 2000s, but in recent years, the resort faced challenges that led to a decline in infrastructure and services.

In a bold and visionary move, the Cross River State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, has reclaimed full management of the resort. The concession agreement with the previous operator was formally terminated due to unmet obligations, and the government has since launched a comprehensive revival plan to restore the resort’s legacy.

At the forefront of this transformation is Comrade Sunday Michael, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Obudu Ranch Resort and the current CEO of Obudu Mountain Resort. Under his stewardship and in alignment with the Governor’s directives, the resort is undergoing extensive renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and service enhancements aimed at returning it to its former glory, and beyond.

This renewed commitment is not just about restoring buildings; it’s about reclaiming Obudu’s status as a global tourism gem, creating jobs, boosting the local economy, and offering guests an unforgettable experience in one of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Our Management Team

At the heart of Obudu Mountain Resort’s revitalization is a passionate and visionary management team, led by Comrade Sunday Michael, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Obudu Ranch Resort and the current CEO of Obudu Mountain Resort. With a deep commitment to restoring the resort’s legacy, he brings both strategic leadership and hands-on dedication to every aspect of its transformation.

Under his guidance—and in alignment with the directives of His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu—the management team is focused on elevating Obudu into a world-class tourism destination. This dynamic team includes professionals across hospitality, operations, tourism development, and guest services, all working in unison to enhance infrastructure, improve guest experiences, and promote sustainable tourism.

Together, they are not only rebuilding the resort’s physical structures but also reimagining its future—infusing it with renewed energy, cultural pride, and a commitment to excellence that reflects the natural beauty and hospitality of Cross River State.
